i can only comment on my charming bar experience of about 3 years ago when i was literally living in Nana Soi. Went there with a friend, a great Brit guy who owned a bar nearby. Was an afternoon and was just up for a few beers. Only a couple of pootyhos about. Connected with a very cute, tall, slim Chinese looking one. Went to an upstairs room. Started a great bang with (unfortunately) a local cockwrapper. Rubber busted (of course) and she didn’t bat an eye as she finished me up in her headhole. Good times.

My buddy had heard that several former Big Mango girls we knew had recently started working at the Charming Bar we went for a drink. Indeed, we found some girls formerly of the Big Mango who greeted us like long lost cousins. The excitement came about 10 minutes into the visit when two girls whizzed past my stool just inside the front door, went off the steps and tumbled into the street in a flurry of hair pulling and nail scratching.

That’s right… two Thai girls fighting. A Siamese Cat Fight just two meters away from me. We had ringside seats to what was, at first, an amusing spectacle. Amusement turned to dismay when one girl grabbed the other by the hair and bashed her head on the asphalt road. The outdoor onlookers quickly stepped in at that point to break things up.

The two girls, amazingly, both returned to the bar (I realized later that one of them worked there and the other was a customer in a group of several ferang guys). Hostilities flared again within moments, and the Mamasan behind the bar produced a length of wood about the width of a baseball bat and about 2/3 as long. She used it to good effect, looking for all the world like she was gonna break some skulls.

Three minutes of angry screaming in Thai and all bills were paid, and the bar drained of customers. As quiet decended, my pal and I were the only customers left, still sitting at the two barstools on the corner of the bar just inside the door, having never moved through the entire event. It was a bit like watching a hurricane blow through, and the silence in the aftermath was a bit eerie.

This was my only visit to the Charming Bar, and I’m unlikely to return. I don’t know whether to give it more stars or fewer stars for having the fight.

Not really my kind of bar.

I visited this bar on my last business trip in December. It’s very small, lousy music and kind of dark and dingy. The only reason to go there is if you are friends with some of the ex Mango girls. I had a great time visiting with In, Apple, Wan, Nuch, and Bua.
