Laid back and easy going. The girls are not overly pushy for drinks or tips. No stunners but they generally act sweet to all customers. Be careful about barfining girls here as they gossip like crazy and next time you return everyone will be looking at you funny and the girl you barfined will not leave you alone while the other girls will ignore you since you have been “claimed” by her.

This is probably the most scam free place in Nana so use this as a value play to meet up with friends before going elsewhere for the xxx fun.

High marks for the handful of times I have been there.

Good burgers, reasonable prices, no whole wheat bread served for breakfast so I bring my own but would gladly pay extra for it if it were available.

    Relaxed no hassle atmosphere.

First visit to Bangkok. The big Mango is a shining star in the smut, scams and slime filled city. This is definitely the kind of bar that should do very well and caters to the market that prefers some normalacy amongst the chaos. It’s a very comfortable environment that works to make you feel like you’re at home in a nice Sydney pub. The drinks are cheap, food and music is great, the free pool and internet are nice but the hats go off to the staff that work very hard to make you feel comfortable. I made some good friends in the few days I spent here and once I found this place there was no other bar i’d rather be in. If you go look for Wan - she will take care of you and has a beautiful honest heart. Treat her well. 5 stars to the Mango team and I’ll be seeing you again on my next trip to the City of Angels.

After picking up on the Big Mango blog again a few months back, I finally got it together enough to come down and check out the new place. I used to pop in to the old venue and I was curious to see what the new place was like.

It was a Friday night after work and the place was busy. There was a very good vibe, with lots of cute girls and happy customers and good music. After settling in over a few cold beers and waiting for one my drinking buddies to turn up, I checked out the menu. The food, especially the burgers is every bit as good as every one say’s they are – Smitty – you really, really, REALLY need to get that home delivery going!!!!!

My drinking buddy finally turned up and this was when the fun started. We had originally planned to head down to NEP and see what was happening, but we cracked open a bottle of jack and started talking to the girls, who were all good fun and very entertaining. The rest of customers also having a good time and while place does have a definite locals drinking hole feeling about it, everyone is very friendly and welcoming. We had such a good time that we ended up staying and were finally poured out the door at closing to a waiting taxi.

The check bin at the end of the night was reasonable and good value considering we got the beers, the food, the bottle of jack + some lady drinks and those evil, evil mango nipple shots.

I am not a huge fan of Nana and as a rule I don’t drink anywhere near the place, but the Big Mango is fun and good place to end the week – or ruin the weekend ;-)

I hadn’t been to the new Big Mango since they were at Nana Plaza. The new location is a bit tricky to find as it’s away from Soi 4 on a dark side street that seems more like any alley. But once inside the Big Mango I saw the new decor and felt more relaxed. The new place is nice, but feels a bit cramped since the building looks like a narrow 2 story townhouse. It was 7pm (happy hour until 8pm) so I ordered a 65THB Heineken bottle. Two Mango girls immediately sat down on either side of me and started chatting. They seemed pleasant enough so I bought them each a drink. They didn’t want alcohol, so one ordered a Coke and the other orange juice. After two minutes they left to go to the other side of the bar and chat with their co-workers. I was surprised as that seemed like a cheap gogo bar tactic. I order a second beer and sat back and observed another guy buy a girl a drink. She asked if he wanted to play pool. After one game she left him. She sat at the front window starting out into space. Amazing. The guy walked back to the bar and sat down. I struck up a conversation with him and he said he is a regular that goes to Big Mango everyday. I asked him if it was normal for the girls to order a drink then leave the customer. He surprised me when he said yes, that often happens. I wondered why he is a regular but I couldn’t think of a polite way to ask. His phone rang and he had to leave. He asked for check-bin so I didn’t feel like staying as I had seen enough of the place. The bartender calculated his tab and wrote it on a slip of paper, then put it on a silver tray and literally threw it down on the counter towards him. The bartender just scowled at him and didn’t say a word. That was rude, but I figured maybe there was some history between the bartender and him. When I get my bill, I get the same treatment, it’s literally thrown towards. I asked him what was going on with this place as the old Mango was so much fun. He replied that when the manager is not in the bar, the girls ignore customers and basically do what they want. When I see my bill it says 380THB. That’s strange because for 2 Heinekens and 2 lady drinks I’m expecting 65+65+100+100=330THB, only the bill was 380THB. What the hell, are they charging VAT + service or something the new Mango? Are the non alcoholic lady drinks 125THB? The check-bins they put in my cup said 100THB each for lady drinks. At this point I didn’t want to deal with it, so I put 400THB on their silver tray and left. I was really let down because I enjoyed the old Mango. However based on my visit, I don’t see any reason to return the new Mango.

The Big Mango bar is like the beat of the Rio Carnival combined with the sounds of waves lapping gently on the shore. This apparent dichotomy is nothing of the sort… it is a seamless welding of all things good and pure with all things depraved and desirable. Foaming suds are delivered deftly to your waiting hands by charmed angels leaving just a trace of their scent wafting through the air as they glide effortlessly away making you wonder if they had ever been there at all. Burgers are produced with a gastronomic pride that befits staff who know they have just delivered ambrosia on a plate. The choice is vast, the standard always the very highest.
Earnest men discuss sports and politics while casting an eye over to the pool table where girls are bent over cueing up their shot. ‘What a truly inspiring cue rack on the wall’ the men think to themselves while wondering whether or not to chat up that almond eyed lovely in the corner with her friends (tip: she’ll say yes!)
The bar girls are faultlessly professional (I know, because one of them told me so) and beautiful (she told me that too) – they make your visit something you will treasure for the rest of your life. You return the next day convinced that something so wonderful must have been an illusion – but no – it wasn’t.
Stepping outside the bar and walking down the street you happen upon all the darkness and depravity that Bangkok has to offer – and that’s just the 7/11 convenience store.. Venturing further down soi 4 anything and everything you can imagine is there for the watching or for the taking – it’s your call. If your eyes have bulged too much, if your jaw is resting on your belt buckle (or if you have been particularly proactive and you are drained of bodily fluids) make your way back to the Big Mango bar – where everybody – ok, somebody - knows your name

Been to both the old and new Mango. The draw to the original Mango was the food; 99baht for hamburger and fries. I found the beer was ALWAYS ice cold (something most bars seem to have a hard time doing, especially late at night).

The Nana location was a bit of a hassle at times because of the location and the go-go girls from the other bars grabbing at you and otherwise trying to block you from entering the bar.

That problem is long gone with the new location. Although it might be a bit difficult to find on your first visit (look for the small Soi almost directly across from the 7-11) I like the new location better as the immediate area is cleaner (in my opinion NEP is akin to a ram shackled house that needs to be bulldozed) and you don’t need to yell to be heard above the noise from 5 different sound systems).

Inside the new Mango, the interior reminds me of some of the neighborhood bars around Rush Street in Chicago or the old pubs in Boston: Exposed brick and mortar with concrete floors. They’ve got 1 pool table downstairs and two upstairs (there is plenty of space around the pool tables upstairs so perhaps the previous poster was complaining about the table downstairs).

Just like the old Mango, the food here is great. The breakfast muffin is very good (plan on skipping lunch that day) but for me the main attraction is still the burgers and fries (or chips if you prefer). The burgers at McDonald’s seem to be of low quality beef, so if you want a big, juicy burger in Bangkok the Big Mango is the place. The menu doesn’t stop there as there are chicken sandwich, fish, pasta dishes and of course Thai food, none of which have disappointed me.

Since I’m not the tourist type who’s mongering in Bangkok, what I appreciate most about the Big Mango’s new location and atmosphere is that during the day through late afternoon I can meet business associates there and even get some work done beforehand without countless interruptions. The wifi works great and free access to the internet on the computers on the 2nd floor is a bonus. The music is at a level where you can actually enjoy the wide selection of music being played yet still chat with the bar staff or your friends without raising your voice (well, at least until mid evening when the drinking crowd rolls in).

The service staff is good - meaning you don’t have to wait around or interrupt any of the staff from their SMS session to get food or drink. They are very friendly, cheerful and you’ll find some very attractive girls on staff.

Ice cold beer, good music, good service, excellent food, free popcorn, pool and internet. It’s a great place to hang out or to start your evening of debauchery, but don’t be surprised if you stay longer than you planned.

I was never in the “Old Big Mango” so I can’t compare it to what it once was. This has become my new base of operations so to speak. I love the atmosphere, the exposed brick, cement bar, lighting and music. This is basically a neighborhood style bar at the moment, so I can’t assign it marks based on something it used to be or what I want it to be. For me it is a nice meeting place to sit and have a conversation, read a paper (the current dailys are available at the bar). At night the atmosphere can change to a party place when more customers arrive and the girls have a few shots of Tequila in them.

The staff is friendly with some real cuties, the owners nice, and the prices extremely reasonable. The food is outstanding and the place is always clean.

The Mango has three pool tables, IMHO the only one that is in kind of an awkward position is the one downstairs. The tables are nice, and it is FREE! As already mentioned the Mango has three internet computers upstairs, also free. There also I believe four big plasma screen televisions throughout the place that often have an F1 race or the news on. The music is consistently good, and you can even submit requests on the quieter days.

The upstairs balcony is nice, but there is not much to look at but apartments or construction about 10 feet away. It is a bit warm at the moment which would explain most customers desire to sit in the AC.

I have sampled a great deal of the food available on the menu, and almost all of it has been outstanding. The prices extremely reasonable as well. I would have to disagree with Werewolf, the Mango McMuffin is good, but not great, but to each their own. IMHO the real star of the menu is the California burger, in the words of Homer Simpson “This is what Angels must taste like!” One of the best hamburgers I have ever had.

All in all I love this bar!

The new Big Mango isn’t the old Big Mango. Instead of an airy, open bar overlooking Nana, the newBM is a smallish, closed in bar with exposed brick & beams on a tiny sub-soi of Soi Nana.

Instead of a bar that where you pop in and out of between visits to the go gos of the plaza, one inside the newBM you tend to stay inside and drink. It feels a lot more like it’s near neighbors, including the Tavern… that is, a place where locals go to meet and chat over several drinks.

The pool tables are jammed into awkward spaces and the mood tends to be dampened by the small space and stark surroundings. The staff tends to be an attractive and pleasant crew, but they seem to fight an uphill battle to create any real enthusiasm about their jobs, contrary to the previous incarnation of the Big Mango, where the girls were often the highlight. The few girls that have gone into the newBM with me on my visits have been almost unanimous in saying that they found the very ‘male’ decor off-putting. It’s definitely a “guy’s” atmosphere.

The one potential feature of the bar — a large open balcony on the second level — is largely deserted and un-utilized. I can’t help but think that putting a service girl out there with iced beer, margaitas and some decent music might go a long way towards adding some of the missing atmosphere to the bar.

Meanwhile, the three computers with free internet access on the same floor is a great feature. (And for some unexplained reason there is a shower stall inside the second floor bathroom… just in case you start feeling a bit sticky, I guess).

The strengths of the bar, aside from it’s connection to the blog, are its low prices and decent food menu. The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Mango McMuffin - a creation that is possibly the single greatest breakfast item ever sold in a commercial establishment.

The most important asset of the bar is the owners themselves, who are hands-on, friendly and in-touch with the business. Their frequent presence in the bar tends to draw in friends and acquaintances.

The owners have made the Big Mango a brand-name and destination bar through their very popular blog (the FARANG speaks 2 Much) but the new Big Mango will struggle to hold onto clientele that are not devoted blog followers.

Rather than a lively freelancer bar, the Big Mango feels like one of hundreds of small local pubs I frequented in Sydney; largely indistinguishable from any other. A comfortable place to sit and chat with your mates until you’re well-oiled and ready to go home, but lacking any real distinguishing features and a far cry from the old Nana Plaza location.
